HAMDEN — Just shy of two months ago, then No. 11 Cornell men’s hockey secured a shootout win over then No. 18 Quinnipiac at Madison Square Garden. Since that day, the Big Red hasn’t just fallen in the conference, they’re no longer ranked. As for the Bobcats, well, they’re navigating through a strange plateau, swimming between the last five slots of the USCHO poll.

HAMDEN — Quinnipiac men’s hockey hasn’t exactly had a stellar season — and it seems like Northeastern is at the forefront of that measuring stick. Circle back to its season-opening exhibition loss to the Huskies on Oct. 6, 2024. The stakes were entirely different, but the outcome was eerily similar to that of Saturday’s stunning 5-1 loss against the very same team. “We just struggled,” head coach Rand Pecknold said.

HAMDEN — Quinnipiac women’s basketball cruised to its seventh win of the season after defeating Yale 76-50 with relative ease Monday night. During the early stages of the game, Quinnipiac focused on quick and effective transition opportunities. The ball flew across the court as soon as a Bobcat player grabbed a defensive board and took just a few steps.

Quinnipiac men’s hockey normally plays Cornell twice throughout the ECAC slate. This year, nestled between its two annual matchups, was a third — the sixth installment of the Frozen Apple at Madison Square Garden in which Cornell pulled out a shootout win in a 3-3 tie. The Big Red selects opponents to host every other year in late November to recognize alumni and present players at the World’s Most Famous Arena.

Quinnipiac University students and faculty kicked off winter fesivities with the fifth annual Mt. Carmel Quad lightning outside of the Arnold Bernhard Library on Dec. 3. Students gathered on the quad to sip hot chocolate, customize paper snow globes and take photos on a sleigh. There were also four different contests such as best original sweater and most school spirit, as well as holiday trivia. “I’m so excited,” junior business major Amarri Monroe said.

For the third time in as many years, Quinnipiac volleyball will face off against Fairfield in the MAAC Championship game on Sunday afternoon. The Bobcats won in 2022 as the No. 6 seed of the tournament, living out their Cinderella story over the then-No.1 Stags. Last year, the again-No.1 Fairfield blocked then-No.2 Quinnipiac from l back-to-back titles at its home court. And today at 1 p.m. these two teams will meet again in a repeat of last year as the No.1 and No.2 seeds of the tournament.

In the late 1960s, Boston Bruins goaltender Gerry Cheevers was struck in his all-white mask by a puck during practice. When he stepped back onto the ice after going to the locker room, Cheevers’ fiberglass had black stitches painted across it. He had asked trainer John Forristall to paint his mask in places where he would have been injured if he hadn’t worn one. Why? Cheevers wanted to stand out.

HAMDEN — During the final minute of the second half, Quinnipiac women’s basketball attempted to get a shot off before the 30-second mark. But Princeton’s defense proved formidable everywhere except the glass, with the Tigers allowing three shot attempts from Quinnipiac before fouling graduate student forward Caranda Perea. As Perea attempted her first free throw the ball landed on the left side of the rim, wedged between the hoop and the backboard.

Bottom of the ninth, 7-6 Los Angeles Dodgers. Right-hand pitcher Walker Bueler stares down New York Yankees left fielder Alex Verdugo at the plate. 1-2 count. Breaking ball, strike three swinging — the Dodgers are world champions. And hitting coordinator and Quinnipiac baseball alum Louis Iannotti ‘16 gets his second ring in four years. “The first one is just sitting in a box in my closet, and I’m sure the second one will be right next to it until we have a cool place to have it,” Iannotti said.

As of publication, Quinnipiac men’s hockey sits No. 10 in the ECAC and dropped to No. 19 in the USCHO National Poll, the closest it’s been to being unranked since dipping under the top 20 in 2017. Yet it was just 19 months ago that head coach Rand Pecknold achieved his magnum opus and manned his squad to its first national championship. Not to mention the Bobcats entered the 2024-25 slate at No. 7 in the country.
