NEW ROCHELLE, NEW YORK — Quinnipiac men’s basketball edged out Iona 63-62 Sunday afternoon in a game that can be summed up in one sentence. “We just kept competing,” Quinnipiac head coach Tom Pecora said. Iona had two double-digit leads in the game, one in each half capitalizing on the Bobcats’ ongoing shooting struggles. At the half, Quinnipiac clawed back from an early deficit to pull within four.

The term “Fab Five” became synonymous with the University of Michigan basketball program in the early 90s, when freshman Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson joined together to lead the Wolverines to two-straight national championship appearances in 1992 and 1993. Now, that nickname may start brewing in Hamden soon.

Quinnipiac men’s hockey normally plays Cornell twice throughout the ECAC slate. This year, nestled between its two annual matchups, was a third — the sixth installment of the Frozen Apple at Madison Square Garden in which Cornell pulled out a shootout win in a 3-3 tie. The Big Red selects opponents to host every other year in late November to recognize alumni and present players at the World’s Most Famous Arena.

Quinnipiac women’s basketball almost did the impossible. Down over 20 points in the third quarter, then undefeated Quinnipiac went on a tear to claw its way back into contention against the now 7-0 University of Miami in a thrilling 83-74 defeat. With momentum on its side, down just two points with a minute and change left on the clock, the Bobcats controlled their destiny.

My favorite genre of music is country, so whenever a new singer puts on their cowboy boots and strums their guitar, I have to peek at their music. That’s exactly what happened when Shaboozey appeared on my TikTok feed, teasing one of his new songs “Let It Burn.” His ability to combine country with hip-hop feels like a contrast to the slow country music we see in the genre.

I am not the world’s biggest boxing fan. I have watched as many headline fights as I have fingers on one hand. Most of the matches I have seen involve influencers. While these fights don’t compare to World Boxing Council (WBC) bouts, they capture my attention because of the names involved. But when the opponents are out of their league in age and a fight is purely a cash grab, my attention wavers.

As the buzzer sounded in the opening round of the College Basketball Invitational on March 24, Matt Balanc ‘24 walked off the court for the final time as a Bobcat after a 64-63 loss to Evansville. It wasn’t the ideal ending for the Silver Spring, Maryland native’s illustrious career. Balanc shot 25% from the field and only scored seven points, finishing his career in Hamden with 1,721 points — eight points shy of Quinnipiac’s Division I all-time scoring record.

Last season for Quinnipiac women’s basketball could be described as underwhelming at best. Most of that disappointment can be attributed to elements out of the team’s control, such as injuries. It was clear Quinnipiac needed to regroup and recruit — and recruit it did. The Bobcats landed the services of freshman point guard Gal Raviv, who spent the summer representing her home country of Israel in Fiba’s U18 Tournament.

Bottom of the ninth, 7-6 Los Angeles Dodgers. Right-hand pitcher Walker Bueler stares down New York Yankees left fielder Alex Verdugo at the plate. 1-2 count. Breaking ball, strike three swinging — the Dodgers are world champions. And hitting coordinator and Quinnipiac baseball alum Louis Iannotti ‘16 gets his second ring in four years. “The first one is just sitting in a box in my closet, and I’m sure the second one will be right next to it until we have a cool place to have it,” Iannotti said.

In the middle of April, several weeks after Quinnipiac men’s hockey fell to Boston College in the NCAA Tournament, senior defenseman Davis Pennington stepped into a room at M&T Bank Arena to make a decision about his future. It wasn’t quite as life-defining as the choice he made seven years earlier, committing to play college hockey at Nebraska Omaha. Nor was it on par with the one he made just a year previous, opting to transfer 1,300 miles east to Quinnipiac.
