WAYNESVILLE, N.C. (FOX Carolina) - North Carolina officials will start treatment in May for an infestation of spongy moths in the Waynesville area. Officials said the invasive moths, also known as gypsy moths, have infested three blocks and they will need to treat nearly 6,000 acres with a biopesticide. Low-altitude helicopters will drop an organic bacteria, Bacillus thuringiensis kurstakii, over the area. The biopesticide is not harmful to humans, pets, or plants, officials said.

Claire Walker, a senior gearing up for graduation, has had perfect attendance for her entire public school career. Walker’s mother said she set her mind on the goal when she was only 4 years old. She has two cousins who graduated with perfect attendance, and it “lit a fire in her.”“Once I made it through elementary school, I had to make it through the rest,” Claire said. On April 16, Limestone’s Board of Trustees announced that without $6 million in financial support, the university would need to move to a fully-online model or shut down entirely.
