Two cell-based gene therapies for sickle cell disease, a group of inherited red blood cell disorders, were granted full approval for broad patient use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). One of the therapies, called Casgevy, will be the first to treat a genetic condition like sickle cell disease with a gene-editing technique called CRISPR. The novel treatment was developed by Vertex Pharmaceuticals and CRISPR Therapeutics.
