By JUAN MELAMED An antisemitic slogan with a long history in Argentina was discovered graffitied onto a monument in a Buenos Aires park on Wednesday, unnerving local Jews. The graffiti, reading “Serve the nation, kill a Jew,” was inked onto a column of a monument to Simon Bolivar, historically considered “the Liberator” of South America, in Parque Rivadavia in the Argentine capital. A Jewish star stood in for the final word of the slogan.

Cities are the world remade by society. So why are they so inhospitable? The high cost of living, air and noise pollution, the many barriers to accessibility, the scarcity of communal gathering places and green space, the high rate of traffic accidents, washrooms and drinking water for customers only, narrow or no sidewalks — all of this adds up and imbues cities, which are home to over 55 percent of humanity, with a hostility towards human well-being. The conservative Saskatchewan Party is heading to its fifth election victory, even after 17 years of misrule. The Sask Party led by Brad Wall, “the demon barber of the prairies,” defeated the NDP in 2007. Over the years the government has carried out a fairly standard conservative austerity agenda of low corporate taxes, resistance to federal climate change measures, privatizing some of the province’s remaining public crown corporations and liquidating the Wheat Pool.
