    The scenes describing the aftermath of Moth’s attack were particularly abrupt for me. As Moth recovers in hospital, she writes “Do I look like a monster?”. I felt equally sad and angry for Moth and what she endured – and also shock too. Shock from the cruelty of the attack, and also shock at seeing someone with a different face on screen.

    9) The Savage Coloniser by Tusiata AviaTusiata Avia is a poet and author who won the Prime Minister's Award for Literary Arts in 2024. In Here we are, read us: Women, disability and writing, she says: “Epilepsy is not what I would choose if I was ordering what to have in my life, but it is what I have.” However, writing helps her express that “epilepsy is not shameful”. Her 2020 book The Savage Coloniser explores the histories of violence and she offers many voices that offer hope.

    This year has been particularly challenging for the disability community, marked by significant changes in funding. But amid these challenges, we’ve also seen moments of joy. Most importantly, we’ve seen the disability community present in lots of spaces - whether at hīkoi, protests or community events - coming together in solidarity and mutual support. Out of every day in the year, today is our day to share disabled joy, to honour our struggles and to stand - or sit - together.
