For many Americans, Memorial Day weekend is about backyard parties and beach trips, but for one man, it’s about carrying the names and memories of those who didn’t come home. In December of 1967, then 19-year-old Jim Leyson boarded a plane at Pearl Harbor to make the journey to Vietnam. He worked as a radio operator in the 4th Battalion, 3rd Infantry.

(WMBB) – Students in the JROTC at Holmes County High School got a once-in-a-lifetime experience to test out what it feels like to fly a F-35, a single-engine single-seat fighter jet, through the sky. Own The Sky is a virtual reality flying simulator. It is a partnership between the U.S. Air Force, Air Force Reserve, and the Air National Guard. With a headset and joy sticks, students can be transported to a world where they were flying a fighter jet.

On May 23, 2010, the first plane took off from the Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport’s runway. Since then, the airport has served nearly 2 million passengers; a 501% increase that airport officials could have never expected.
