    Williams Lake council has voted not to declare a state of local emergency over public safety concerns. Last week, councillors asked staff to prepare a report on a potential state of emergency that could provide the B.C. city with temporary powers to address crime and disorder. That report concluded that council does have the authority to declare a state of emergency but feedback from emergency service agencies suggested that they did not see a benefit in doing so.

    A two-alarm fire ripped through a home in Surrey on Monday night. Firefighters were called to 66A Avenue near 180th Street just before 9 p.m. The home was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived and the fast-moving fire sent neighbours scurrying. All residents inside the burning home and tenants in the basement made it out safely.

    The body of a man missing from the Merritt, B.C., area since 2023 has been found, according to his family. Miguel Mack was last seen on Feb. 27, 2023, by his family and was reported missing on March 3, 2023. On March 1, 2024, BC RCMP's Southeast District Major Crime Unit said they believed Mack was a victim of a homicide. In a social media post on Monday, Mack's family members said his body had been found.

    A 28-year-old man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in the death of a Granville Street nightclub promoter in 2018. Kalwinder Thind, 23, was stabbed and killed outside Cabana Lounge on the morning of Jan. 27, 2018, after an altercation that started between two groups inside the club spilled out onto the street.

    A porcupine that was making its home in northern B.C. suddenly found itself in the interior after it was inadvertently transported inside the wreckage of a plane. Eva Hartman, who works at the Interior Wildlife Rehabilitation Society, told Global News that the female porcupine crawled into the wreckage, which was then recovered. "It was airlifted out by a helicopter because it was in a remote location," Hartman said.
