Diona Osterman-Api’s house still gleams like a new penny to her and her family. Osterman-Api and two of her daughters have lived in the house for a year and a half, but the glow of home ownership still shines bright for this family. Once homeless in Montana, Osterman-Api’s family has lived in hotels, a camper and most recently in an apartment that wasn’t the best situation for them. With encouragement from friends and co-workers, Osterman-Api decided to apply for a Habitat home in 2021.

My sister and I traded dreams one day. Mainly because, with her new baby and my one- and three-year-old, the chance to actually fall asleep and dream was a rarity. We sat on my peeling leather couch in the sundrenched room, looking over the Pacific, totally unaware of the beauty surrounding us because we were in our sister cocoon of love and laughter and caffeine. “Oh my god, it was so hot.”“Oh?” I say, taking a piece of dog kibble out of my toddler’s mouth.

To this day, I can still feel the devastation. I push through the velvet curtains and walk on stage, the smell of decades of must, sweat, and old socks permeating the air. I was in grade six, wearing my off-the-shoulder, boat neck cream sweater and BonnieBelle Lip Smacker, with the confidence of someone who has never been dealt a blow to their self-esteem. This election was in the bag.
