For a superfan I’ve not been very diligent with Joni Mitchell’s back catalogue (comprising 19 studio albums recorded over 39 years, several live ones and an ever-increasing volume of compilations). My relationship with her music broadly begins with 1969’s Clouds and until recently, save a few random tracks, it ended with 1976’s Hejira. In some ways, this curtailment of her oeuvre has been intentional.

The last time I was in Los Angeles, in February 2020, I had told a white lie. My taxi driver asked me what I was doing there. “I’m here to write about Joni Mitchell,” I said. I wanted to have a story. Earlier this month, I landed at LAX airport, returning to see Mitchell play at the Hollywood Bowl. In 2020, the idea she would perform again seemed like fantasy. In 2015 she had an aneurysm that left her unable to speak or walk, and even before that, her public performances had been rare.

Reading Lists Amy Key recommends books from across the world about solitude and its pleasures, desires and conflicts I thought it would be easy to compile a list of books where women live alone. And it was, but what is considerably less easy it to think about books where women live alone and don’t fall into, or emerge from, a completely deranged state. I asked friends, and one replied, “the first thing that came to mind was Marian Engel’s Bear, then I remembered she has sex with a bear.” We...

Last summer a small, perfectly intact sea anemone shell, which I’d found on the remote Scottish island of Eigg, was broken when I had friends over for drinks in the garden. Bone-white and immaculately pierced with holes. One second it was being admired, the next it was in two pieces, a clean break. I hold the pieces together, the break becomes invisible, it seems impossible that it was ever in parts. But then I let go. The two halves roll backwards, like toddlers colliding in a game.

One in four of us is single. This status is often perceived as undesirable and temporary, and it comes with real disadvantages, from , to social exclusion and even ridicule. But “single” is not a label I choose for myself. In fact, I want to resist ever being defined by my relationship status. When I think of the word “single”, what comes to mind are individually wrapped cheese slices, 45rpm records, a ticket to somewhere exciting.
