A leading brass band is facing the prospect of insolvency due to rising costs and fewer bookings. Newstead Brass, based in Nottingham, was created from the original Newstead colliery band which began in 1974. However, the 27-piece band is running out of cash to pay for rehearsal space and the professional staff who lead the musicians. It is hoping to raise £3,000 from its Christmas campaign to keep the band afloat throughout its anniversary year.

A former school chaplain is set to take legal action against a headteacher, claiming he was harassed and discriminated against after he was sacked. Rev Bernard Randall, 51, was dismissed by Trent College in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, in 2019 following a sermon he gave about LGBT teachings. He lost his unfair dismissal claim and has now appealed against the ruling. Head Bill Penty declined to comment at this stage of the legal process.

A rare sports car built in the early 1950s has gone on display after it was bought at an auction. The vehicle - said to be the fifth Paramount car ever made - was discovered at a classic car auction. The car has undergone a huge restoration after being purchased for £4,000 by the Great British Car Journey museum in Ambergate, Derbyshire. Richard Usher, the founder and director of the museum, said bosses had no idea the car existed until the sale.

The leader of Nottingham City Council said its declaration of effective bankruptcy pointed to a worsening national crisis. The council's chief finance officer issued a section 114 notice on Wednesday saying the authority was unable to deliver a balanced budget. The Labour-run council was set for a £23m overspend in the 2023-24 financial year. David Mellen said local government was being "starved of resources".

The liquidation of a council-run energy company is due to complete more than a year after it was taken in-house. Enviroenergy had operated as a separate company, providing heating for around 5,000 homes and 70 businesses including the city's Motorpoint Arena. A decision was made by Nottingham City Council in 2021 to bring it in-house while the legal entity was liquidated. At the time, the council said the company had been profitable every year since 2013, apart from 2017.

A £10m library featuring a café, conference rooms, an immersive cinema room and more than 180,000 books has opened in Nottingham. The three-storey Nottingham Central Library on Collin Street also has 58 computers and free Wi-Fi.The library was originally due to open in 2021. The city has been without a central library for more than three years following the permanent closure of the old Angel Row library in 2020.

A rare breed sheep belonging to an agricultural college in Derbyshire has died after a suspected dog attack. It was thought to have happened on farmland used by Derby College's Broomfield Hall campus, in Morley, between 12:00 and 15:00 GMT on Sunday. The Derbyshire Gritstone sheep was found injured and died soon after arriving at a vets. Derbyshire Police has asked anyone with information on the attack to contact the force.

A 10-year-old boy was taken to hospital after having a "terrifying" reaction to chocolate bought at a market. Kim gave the confectionary to her four children on Saturday night as a treat but said they soon began feeling sick, hallucinating and acting "spaced out". Her husband Ian had purchased the chocolate earlier that day from a stall at Mansfield Market in Nottinghamshire. Police said they were investigating and the incident had been referred to the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

Police are to investigate the role of officers after an 83-year-old woman died in flooding during Storm Babet. Maureen Gilbert was found dead at her home in Tapton Terrace, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, on 21 October. Derbyshire Police made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as officers were involved in the evacuation of homes in the area the previous day. The IOPC has decided the matter should be dealt with locally by the force.
