Following on from a successful first year, The Lancashire Wildlife Trusts are hosting this popular event at their flagship nature reserve once again. The winter fayre will take place on Friday 13th December, 5 - 8pm.

    LANCASHIRE WILDLIFE TRUST: The rare and protected great crested newt (Image: John Bridges) When I think of a newt, the scene from ‘Matilda’ immediately comes to mind. The school children find one in a stream and put it in Ms. Trunchbull’s jug of water as revenge for her tyrannic teaching, mistaking it for ‘a bug’. Apart from that childhood memory, I was foggy on my newt knowledge until recently. Now I believe there’s ‘nowt so cute as a newt, and they are my favourite amphibian.

    LITTERING THE FLOOR Scarlet elf cups love decaying matter (Image: Alan Wright) If you go down to the woods today… you might see a scarlet surprise. One of my favourite sights on a woodland walk is the merry scarlet elf cup. These fungi delight the inner child in me who trusted that woodlands and forests were home to fairy folk. I was thrilled to see so many of them spattered across the woodland floor on my (rainy) weekend walk.
