Becoming a physician is hard work. No doubt about it. Each phase felt like the steepest of learning curves. Remember your MS-1 anatomy class? So many names and terms to memorize. How about that first clinical rotation in your third year? It took me at least an hour to get a simple SOAP note written in a patient’s chart (yes, handwritten notes back in those days). And then there was the dreaded internship year, PGY-1, that was riddled with problem lists, admission orders, and diagnostic codes.

Here it is … an epic post about EHRs.I’ve been waiting for years to write this. Literally, years. Ever since 2014, when I was required to attend 30+ hours of unpaid training for this new EHR, I knew this post would be written. I did have the option of 10 additional unpaid training hours to become a “gold star super user.” That status would have allowed me to teach every confused doctor in our office how to log in and write their notes. Thanks, but no thanks.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced plans to offer financial incentives to whistleblowers who report allegations of wrongdoing. It’s an effort to fill gaps left open by existing whistleblower and bounty provisions offered by the SEC, CFTC, IRS and FinCEN. The DOJ envisions a pilot program within 90 days, with a formal start date for the full program later this year. U.S. Attorney’s Offices in New York and California announced plans for similar whistleblower reward programs this year.

If you expect to generate 10 or more 1099s for the 2023 tax year, there are some new IRS regulations you need to know. In February of 2023, the Department of Treasury and IRS issued final regulations amending the rules for filing returns and other documents, which includes 1099s. These regulations are additionally reducing the e-filing requirement from 250 informational forms down to 10 or more.
