‘Helping with the Domaine Evremond acquisition in 2015 changed my career. Taittinger’s UK importer referenced our company by name in the press release that went out to wine media, and Pierre-Emanuel Taittinger gave a speech at Westminster Abbey where he thanked people important to the deal, including my firm. It created a wave. ‘At the time English wine was still the underdog of the sparkling wine world. People in the know were aware of the quality of the wines, and of the potential.

Last year Tesco carried out a massive overhaul of its wine range, making space for 130 new offerings. Since then it has brought a new Master of Wine into its buying team, Beth Kelly MW, and has rejigged some of the team’s responsibilities. As you would expect in such an enormous wine range, there are high points and low points. You won’t find a wine that has been badly made – there’s far too much competition to be on the shelves of Britain’s biggest supermarket for that to ever be a danger.

It is in just such a situation that scoring can be helpful. Wine adventurers, who come across unfamiliar sparkling wines priced at the same level as Champagne, may be given the reassurance they need to buy after seeing a high score given by a taster or outlet they hold in high regard. There’s no doubt that many consumers find wine scores useful – hence our use of them in Decanter.

Chair Nick Lander explained that books were judged against several criteria: they needed to contain a large amount of original research; be of enduring, educational value; be a pleasure to read; and be well produced. This year, the 46th year of the awards, saw a record number of submissions, with more than 160 books entered.

I’m used to tasting at merchant or regional tastings, where a diverse range of grapes and styles are showcased. These tastings are expensive to stage, and it makes sense to curate the best line-up possible. In panel tastings, by contrast, any producer or retailer can enter a wine, as long as it meets the criteria. In the Vermentino tasting, many of the scores were in the mid-80s and the best wines stood out clearly from the pack.
