This past holiday weekend, with the 250th anniversary celebration of the American Revolution and the Boston Marathon, 10 trips on the Fall River and New Bedford lines (five inbound and five outbound) were replaced with bus service.

NEW BEDFORD — Congressman Bill Keating is demanding answers from top Trump administration officials about the violent arrest of an undocumented Guatemalan man in New Bedford on Monday. In a letter on Thursday to Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem and FBI Director Kash Patel, Keating said the man, Juan Francisco Méndez, 29, was in the process of receiving derivative asylum status through his wife, an asylee, and requested that he be reunited with his wife and son, absent a criminal record.

NEW BEDFORD — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement gave “misleading” and “last-minute” information to city law enforcement and has not responded to the city’s requests for more information about the violent arrest of a New Bedford immigrant this week, according to Mayor Jon Mitchell. Juan Francisco Méndez, 29, an immigrant from Guatemala with no Massachusetts criminal record was arrested on Monday.

FALL RIVER — A major New Bedford drug trafficking case has been dismissed after state prosecutors determined the investigation was tainted by a sexual relationship between a now-retired city police officer and a woman he used as an informant. The defense had presented evidence of misconduct by New Bedford detective Jared Lucas with Carly Medeiros, who was also in a relationship with the defendant, Steven Ortiz, court records state.

NEW BEDFORD — Mayor Jon Mitchell has convened a screening committee to interview and recommend candidates for the city’s next police chief. The 10-person committee includes city councilors, retired legal officials and police officers, and two consultants whom the mayor has contracted to review issues within the New Bedford Police Department. The city will post the position for chief next week. It’s open to both internal and external applicants.
