Andre Schmid’s book examines the development of North Korea in the first twelve years after the end of the Korean War. This is usually presented as the story of Kim Il Sung’s consolidation of absolute power and his construction of a total command industrial economy. That is, it centres on Kim Il Sung and the new modern North Korea that he was building. Ordinary Koreans get left out.
