This species has three distinct plastid lineages across its range: an Appalachian lineage (A) restricted to the Appalachian Mountains, an Eastern lineage (E) located east of the Appalachian Mountains, and a widespread Western lineage (W) occurring throughout most of the range (Fig. 1A).
