Hundreds of migrants from the West African country Mauritania have been settling in Cincinnati to escape state violence. U.S. Customs and Border Protection data says more than 8,500 Mauritanians arrived in the U.S. from March to June - up from around 1,000 during the four months prior. According to the Associated Press, Mauritania was one of the last countries to criminalize slavery. Despite this, the practice persists in parts of the country.

KENTON COUNTY, Ky. (WXIX) - A disabled veteran out of Northern Kentucky struggled to get a disability benefit from the county after he was rejected. Now he is helping a few others with the tedious process. It takes months, sometimes years, for a military service member to receive disability benefits following active duty. Terrence Lee served his country for four years, completing his airborne training in North Carolina. “It was fun. I mean, I loved it,” he told FOX19 NOW.

CINCINNATI (WXIX) - Four months after Issue 2 passed in Ohio, legalizing the recreational sale and use of marijuana, the progress on implementing the new law has been hazy. The Ohio Division of Cannabis Control says some have falsely claimed the process has stalled. “What we keep seeing over and over from reporters and others is the idea that somehow it’s being held up,” division superintendent Jim Canepa said.

CINCINNATI (WXIX) - As Black History Month gets underway, a history-making event is happening next week in Hamilton County after a handful of years with a diverse group of county commissioners. It has only been six years since Hamilton County has had Black representation in the county commissioner’s office in its more than 225-year history. Stephanie Summerow Dumas was the first Black American to be elected into a commissioner’s chair in Hamilton County.
