The most disruptive roadway project of the 2025 construction season in Massachusetts is set to begin this weekend. The state's Department of Transportation is planning to reduce a stretch of I-90 through Newton and Weston by the I-95 interchange down to one lane in each direction during two upcoming weekends, so that crews can replace a bridge that carries the highway over train tracks. Officials say the lane closures could lead to major backups.

Hundreds of the promised trains are overdue. In 2014, the transit agency signed a contract with the China Railroad Rolling Stock Corporation, known as CRRC, to build hundreds of new cars. All trains were supposed to be delivered by 2023.

Commuters on the Red Line's Braintree branch got a speedy surprise Friday morning. According to the MBTA, trains began traveling 50 mph on certain stretches between Braintree and JFK/UMass stations at the start of service early Friday morning. T officials said it was the first time in over 20 years that any trains in the subway system had been allowed to go faster than 40 mph, thanks to months of work to upgrade the branch's previously slow zone-ridden tracks.
