    The Catholic community in Massachusetts is mourning Pope Francis, who died at age 88 on Monday. "In his ministry and across his writings, he has continuously called us to deeper faith and to a more generous participation in the boundless compassion of God," Henning wrote of Francis. "He has challenged us to turn away from selfish impulses and towards communion with others and respect for God's creation."The pontiff had a close relationship with O'Malley, Henning's predecessor.

    After 17 years underground, a special variety of the insects, called periodical cicadas, will crawl up in parts of Massachusetts and across a broad swath of the country this spring. They're ready to shed their exoskeletons and put on a show. They belong to Brood XIV, one of the largest posses of periodical cicadas by geographical span. Beyond the Bay State, the bugs are predicted to pop out in parts of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, all the way down to Tennessee and northern Georgia.

    Patriots' Day is the Massachusetts holiday marking the first battle of the American Revolution. This year's festivities are extra special, as the state celebrates 250 years since the battles of Lexington, Concord and Menotomy on April 19, 1775. The day is commemorated on the third Monday of the month and falls on April 21 this year. There are plenty of activities marking the semiquincentennial anniversary of the battles, both leading up to and on Patriots' Day.

    The Harvard chapter of the American Association of University Professors sued the Trump administration Friday over what they call an “unlawful and unprecedented” attempt to use federal funding cuts to restrict free speech. The Department of Education announced in late March that it would review $8.7 billion in federal grants and contacts given to Harvard, alleging that the school failed to prevent antisemitic discrimination on campus.
