Six people have been arrested after a 16-year-old boy was seriously injured in a stabbing in York. North Yorkshire Police said officers were called to Baker Street in Clifton at 19:30 BST on Thursday. The teenager was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition, the force said. Five men aged 42, 40, 37, 30 and 23, along with a 41-year-old woman, had since been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent, police said, with all currently held in police custody.

A Labour MP has said the government "absolutely has to" change course following sweeping gains for Reform UK in England's local elections. Rachael Maskell, the MP for York Central, said policies introduced by the government which had not been in its manifesto had forced voters "to look elsewhere". Reform won the Runcorn and Helsby by-election, took control of 10 councils and won mayoral contests in Lincolnshire and Hull and East Yorkshire.

A crisis support service will have a "better future" now it has a permanent home, charity organisers said. The Sparks project, which also provides coaching, counselling and careers advice, previously offered services from temporary locations in Eastfield and Barrowcliff in Scarborough. Michael Whiteley, chair of trustees for Sparks, said opening a permanent premises in Eastfield would see "more services offered to more people".

War memorial will be restored to former gloryThe memorial, next to the York city wall, has become discoloured [Google]A 100-year-old war memorial, which has become stained, dirty and discoloured, is to be cleaned up. The North Eastern Railway War Memorial, on Station Rise in York, was unveiled in 1924, but its stonework has become heavily soiled by water damage, lichen and pollution. Enforcement officers are investigating the appearance of a sign which has appeared in the window of a famous old department store. The large, bright blue vinyl sign was installed in the Betfred unit on Bradford's Market Street, which is part of a building that dates back to the 1870s. Fire crews will be at York Minster to practise rescuing casualties [NYFRS]Firefighters embarking on a training exercise at York Minster sought to reassure residents all was well at the cathedral. Plumes of "cosmetic smoke" will be used in the exercise between 18:00 and 21:00 BST, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (NYFRS) said.
