There were a lot of baseball and softball games and soccer matches and results upon results upon results. The spring was a crazy time for myself, but one that understandably probably left you wanting some more human interest stories — stories that highlighted deserving individuals in our community. Now, every single athlete this spring who had their name in the newspaper — there were a whole lot of them — deserved to be recognized.

They were never going down without a fight. The history-making Saluda softball team accomplished too much to not bring the belief back on and around the field. Down a couple of runs in the final inning of Saturday's state title game, Karen Alvarez got a clean hit on a fastball for a two-run homer to cut the lead to a pair with two outs.

Taking home first place in a statewide engineering high school competition is cool. Standing on the field at Williams-Brice Stadium as Gamecock football coach Shane Beamer plays around with your latest feat of engineering? That’s a dream come true.

Nearly eight hours before Saluda softball's scheduled state championship game Thursday against East Clarendon, coach Hannah Towery and the rest of the staff was out on the field. Overnight and morning showers left the field in a less-than-desirable condition, but that wasn't going to stop anyone. Carver Davis was a great quarterback for Ninety Six. A four-sport athlete, the junior has done just about everything for the Wildcats. And that included this offseason, shifting his role on the gridiron to the backfield and the secondary. During Wednesday’s spring game, he was spectacular in his new role for the entirety of the 50-minute scrimmage. A pair of touchdowns and a highlight-reel interception, he led on both sides of the ball during a 22-18 score in favor of the offense.

Ware Shoals advances to the Upper State tournament with a 7-5 upset over Lewisville. Lewisville was 24-6, and Ware Shoals just beat them back-to-back on the road with the season on the line. Wow, simply wow. Heroics on the plate and on the mound from Jayce Medlin.
