The Index-Journal has been in the hands of Greenwood families since it first launched on February 6, 1919. Harry L. Watson was the original owner and served as both editor and publisher for over five decades. The newspaper started its journey on Maxwell Avenue, where it operated on the second floor above a cinema, while the printing press was located on the dirt floor below.

    It took four tries and three different state Department of Motor Vehicle offices before a new-to-me car got a South Carolina title and license plate. On two in-person attempts, I gave up when I realized lines were two hours long and then three hours long. It didn’t help that people who have had seven years to get their REAL ID were freaking out and flooding the agency. So after a couple of days, I went to another office where the line was shorter.

Those who have read this column with any regularity through the years — all seven of you — know that the Kansas City Dog is, of course, my family’s beloved morkipoo Ollie. He gained his nickname nine years ago, when my wife and daughter bought him against my wishes while I was away in Kansas City for a ballgame.
