Two small Manhattan law firms are merging, creating a 35-attorney firm that will focus on construction law, finance, real estate, and commercial litigation, among other practices. The merger is the latest combination involving small firms in the U.S., amid an uptick in firm mergers this year. Goetz Fitzpatrick and Platzer, Swergold, Goldberg, Katz & Jaslow said they are merging to form a New York law firm named Goetz Platzer, effective Jan. 1, 2025.

Robert Menendez, D-New Jersey, on Tuesday, began cross-examining cooperating witness Jose Uribe, a New Jersey businessman who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery, honest services wire fraud, tax evasion and other offenses in March. Menendez’s attorney Adam Fee of Paul Hastings worked to demonstrate to the jurors that while Uribe was close to Menendez’s wife, Nadine Menendez, he did not have extensive interactions with the senator. Andrea Griswold, most recently the Deputy U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has joined Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom as a partner in the firm’s white-collar defense and investigations practice in New York. Griswold had been at SDNY for over a decade, moving from line prosecutor to Chief Counsel to the U.S. Attorney and then on to Deputy U.S. Attorney. But Griswold said it was time for a new challenge, and she saw the most fertile ground in the private sector.

Bruce Garelick, a former board member of the company that embarked on a proposed SPAC merger with former President Donald Trump’s media company in 2021, was found guilty Thursday of securities fraud and conspiracy to commit securities fraud in connection with a $22 million insider trading scheme. Prosecutors contend Trump sought to buy her silence, prompting Michael Cohen to pay Daniels $130,000 and, years later, Manhattan prosecutors to indict Trump with falsifying business records for his alleged reimbursement of Cohen.
