A new plan on the table could keep Dobie Middle School from closing, but would require a shakeup of administration and staff. It's the same turnaround plan being considered for two other Austin Independent School District schools, which have received three consecutive failing accountability scores from the state. It was only a few weeks ago that the district brought families together to discuss a potential closure of Dobie to prevent a state takeover of the district.

A new snapshot count from the Ending Community Homelessness Coalition shows that while the number of those experiencing homelessness in Austin is greater than 2023's previous count, more are also receiving shelter than ever. It's estimated that about 600 more people are receiving shelter than in 2023. That's thanks to significant investments the city has made in shelter beds, such as at the Northbridge Shelter, which has increased its capacity by 50 percent.

While many Austinites may have been left disappointed by the lack of promised rain this week, many other parts of our region got much needed relief. Areas like Lake Buchanan got more than five inches of rain over the past couple of days, which will eventually work its way down to our area. Stephanie Villarreal wasn't even sure she would be able to run at Auditorium Shores Friday. "I low key wish it rained more." Villarreal said.

Hundreds marched from the Texas State Capitol to Austin City Hall Thursday evening, followed by a rally for labor rights in honor of May Day, also known as International Workers Day. "Angry, furious. We're not going to stand for it," Organizer Melody Tremallo said. "It's attacking our very livelihoods. A lot of us have to pay rent and utilities, childcare, and we're all living paycheck to paycheck these days."It's a familiar protest route from one center of power in Austin to the other.

Governor Greg Abbott is threatening to pull funding from the city of San Marcos over a Gaza ceasefire resolution being voted on by the city council next week. The governor is calling the resolution antisemitic, mirroring similar threats made by President Trump towards universities. "If people really care about the Israeli people and the safety of Jewish people, they're advocating for the end to this genocide." Scott Cove with Palestine Solidarity San Marcos said.
