It was back in October 2012 when Nathanial Chalobah and Daniel Pudil both saw red in a game at Cardiff City that Watford last ended a match with nine.

It was a gutsy and impressive display from the Hornets but ultimately it became a story of referee Mr Donohue. He showed Moussa Sissoko two yellow cards within a matter of seconds – the second certainly justifiable though – after Burnley had gone ahead.

(Image: Action Images) The last time Watford hosted Burnley at Vicarage Road, Tom Cleverley scored the only goal of the game in first-half stoppage time. He didn’t emerge for the second half of the game, but little did anybody know then his career was all but over. Ironically, he was replaced by Dan Gosling - who also suffered a career-ending injury later that same season.

End product has been something of an issue for longer than that, though, and is borne out by the fact they have scored less than a goal a game since the turn of the year.
