LOS ANGELES – Co-owner Jon Ledecky, giving praise to the work new general manager Mathieu Darche has done in his one month on the job, believes “the future is now,” for the Islanders. He said it was at least a new motto for the organization. But it’s certainly apropos with the Islanders holding the first overall pick in the NHL Draft, starting Friday night at The Peacock Theater.

It’s a moment James Hagens and his family long anticipated through the early wake-up calls and the late nights getting home to Hauppauge exhausted. Their shared dream of him playing in the NHL goes back to youth hockey, and very early youth hockey at that. And now, finally, it’s the week of the NHL Draft. On Friday at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles, James Hagens will hear his name called in the first round and will, quite likely, become the highest-drafted player ever from Long Island.

Zdeno Chara can now say he started and ended his Hall of Fame career with the Islanders. “Big Z” – the Slovakian defenseman was 6-9, 250 pounds – was announced on Tuesday as one of eight inductees to comprise Hockey Hall of Fame’s Class of 2025. Joe Thornton, Alexander Mogilny, Duncan Keith, Jennifer Botterill and Brianna Decker were also selected as player inductees and longtime Boston University coach Jack Parker and Daniele Sauvageau were elected as builders.

Prospects selected during the NHL Draft on Friday night and Saturday in Los Angeles will take to the stage at the Peacock Theater to greet Commissioner Gary Bettman or another league executive as well as the team representative -- potentially a celebrity – that called his name. That’s fairly standard for the yearly selection process. But then the prospect will enter what looks like a building constructed on the stage to virtually meet that team’s GM and other team officials.

Longtime fan favorite Matt Martin left little doubt at the end of the season he knew his time with the Islanders was coming to an end. He made it official on Tuesday, announcing his retirement as an active player after 15 NHL seasons, all but two with the Islanders. But he’s not leaving the organization. The Islanders announced Martin, 36, has been named a special assistant to recently-hired general manager Mathieu Darche.

As expected, Gov. Hochul’s makes it official this morning that Belmont Stakes will return to Saratoga Race Course in 2026 for a third straight year. Belmont Park is expected to re-open after reconstruction in September, 2026.
