    Tributes have been paid to a “lovely couple” who died after allegedly overdosing on super-strong synthetic opioids after a night out in south London. The pair, named in local media as Gagan Brar, 28, and Kamaldeep Kaur, 20, were found unconscious in their first-floor flat in Southall, west London, last Monday. Despite efforts by paramedics to revive the “friendly” and “beautiful” couple, who are originally from India, they died in the bedroom of their home.

    A council has been accused of building a £50 million “bridge to nowhere” after officials conceded it could not afford to complete the connecting road. The bridge was built as part of a project to provide a new route, the Spalding western relief road, around the west side of the town in Lincolnshire, to ease traffic on the A16. On Monday, Lincolnshire county council admitted the project was not guaranteed as the local authority sought up to £33 million in “external funding”.

    A British pensioner has been arrested in Chile after trying to smuggle 5kg of methamphetamine into the country. The man, 79, was arrested earlier this month after a scanner at Santiago airport detected a "suspicious" substance in his suitcase. Local police claim the man, who has not been named, was found during a search to have up to 5kg of the drug, also known as crystal meth, while leaving for Australia after a stopover in the Chilean capital.
