These photos raise a glass to a city brewery and the pubs it served. Albion Brewery on Woodhouse Lane owned 39 pubs and 31 off-licences across the city at one time. Its pub roster included Queen Hotel in Rothwell, Gun Inn on the corner of Sheepscar Street and Barrack Street, Nag’s Head with brewhouse in Chapel Allerton, the Lord Raglan on Denison Street, Oakwood Hotel on Easterly Road and Ship Inn on Briggate.

Memories from all four corners of the city are featured with branches in Churwell, Chapel Allerton, Chapeltown, Kirkstall, Meanwood, Armley, Crossgates and Horsforth all in focus. It was the month your city enjoyed a Big Breakfast. The popular TV show broadcast live from the city with presenter Peter Andre setting pulses racing at Woodhouse Moor. This was April 1996, a month which featured a celebrity from the literary world pay Leeds a visit.

It’s the road at the heart of the LS12 community which will be familiar to a generation of shoppers, workers and residents. These fantastic photos showcase life on Tong Road which straddles Armley and Wortley during the 1950s and 1960s. They feature a huge range of shops and landmarks which are sure to evoke happy memories for people who called this corner of west Leeds home back in the day.
