One of the hardest aspects of my pastorate has been trying to disciple someone experiencing deconstruction. Much of my pastoral effort in the last few years has been devoted to finding and caring for people struggling with severe doubts. In cases I’ve witnessed, deconstruction often, though not always, leads to deconversion. It’s a central topic of discussion for church members and leaders in my context.

Perhaps no other word in the English language has shifted in meaning like “justice.” It has become one of the central cultural disagreements dividing families, churches, and communities. Just saying the word conjures into the mind everything from police brutality to LGBT+ issues to abortion to labor laws.

Have you been hurt in the church? The church isn’t always a safe space, as much as we’d like it to be, because it exists (for now) in a sinful world and sinners still inhabit the pews. Ecclesiastes 5:1 says, “Guard your steps when you go into the house of God,” and adds in the next breath that there are sometimes fools offering sacrifices inside.

Are most denominations in America in decline? That was a question I considered nearly a decade ago. At the time, the answer was that conservative churches weren’t growing as quickly as they once were, while mainline churches were on a path toward extinction. But a lot has changed since then.
