    According to the Nation’s Report Card, nearly 70% of Pennsylvania’s eighth-graders can’t read or do math at grade level. Results are worse in Philadelphia, where 95% of Black eighth-graders aren’t proficient at math, and 89% can't read at grade level. Moreover, 90% of Hispanic eighth-graders aren’t meeting achievement levels. Gov. Josh Shapiro has abandoned these kids.

    Forget better schools. Apparently, Pennsylvania students need fewer schools, even if that means hurting the kids who need the most help. That’s effectively the message that two of our state’s leaders have sent in the past few weeks. First, Gov. Josh Shapiro demanded cutting funding for cyber charter schools by more than 40% per student. Second, state Auditor General Timothy DeFoor issued a misleading report that’s fueling assaults on cyber charters for supposedly wasting taxpayer money.

Yet now Pennsylvania will arguably play an even bigger bellwether role: showing whether Democrats will learn from this drubbing and deliver policies that make voters’ lives better.

Activists hope to get the Lackawaxen, which is in Wayne and Pike Counties in Pennsylvania, named as a Wild and Scenic River.
