In their inaugural season, McLean’s boys volleyball team entered the lower gym Tuesday night to play the Kellam High School Knights in the state semifinals. Hailing from Virginia Beach, the Knights entered the match with an impressive 26-1 record; the Highlanders, still undefeated, held a record of 22-0. The two Virginia powerhouses were poised for a historic match in McLean’s first-ever boys volleyball state tournament sanctioned by the Virginia High School League (VHSL).

Highlanders keep calm under pressure, beat rivals in tight game McLean varsity baseball faced the Langley Saxons on a rainy Tuesday evening, looking to advance to the Liberty District championship for the third time in many years. McLean’s home game loss to the Saxons earlier in the year was the first such loss in a long time, and the visitors entered the game with the hopes of spoiling McLean’s party for the second time.

EDITORIAL: Lightspeed Classroom threatens student privacy This staff editorial represents the opinion of the majority of The Highlander editorial board. After a pilot program launched in November, Lightspeed Classroom became available to McLean teachers. The application, which is integrated with online class rosters, allows teachers to monitor and control the laptop displays of students in their classes at all times.

From April 27 to May 1, McLean’s DECA team competed in Anaheim, CA in the International Career Development Conference (ICDC). McLean students were stretched across five different categories, competing against hundreds of people in each. The conference had 23,000 students in attendance.

The internet allows for an open exchange of information, making worldwide news accessible to everyone. Unfortunately, this same openness allows for the spread of misinformation and disinformation, which is intentionally deceptive. This issue has always existed, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to identify because of AI enhancement. With the upcoming 2024 presidential election, disinformation is bound to reach new levels of influence.
