1 Introduction Wetlands, characterised by the presence of standing water and/or saturated soils for all or part of the year, are a huge reservoir of soil organic carbon (Mitsch and Gosselink 2007; Nahlik and Fennessy 2016). Although wetlands account for only 6% of the global land area, they account for approximately 30% of the carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems (Stewart et al. 2024).
