This March, there was rejoicing among animation fans and practitioners at an Oscar upset. The animated film Flow, directed by Latvia’s Gints Zilbalodis, won the Academy Award for best animated feature, beating Hollywood blockbusters by Pixar and DreamWorks. Flow is a flood fable without words or humans, telling the story of a small black cat who finds a family of other animals, from a capybara to a Labrador, on a boat on a deluged world.

A G2 driver faces a jail sentence of up to six months after being caught for the third time speeding in the nation's capital. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said that the driver was pulled over on April 5 on Highway 416. At the time, the officer clocked the vehicle travelling 153km/h. This officer also recognized the driver as the same person caught going 159 km/h on the same highway in June 2024. Even a month prior, another officer caught them going 167 km/h on Highway 417.

I write about anime, but this week, I’m talking about Castlevania: Nocturne. As its fans know, it’s an action-horror series, following the original animated Castlevania that started in 2017. A new batch of Nocturne episodes dropped onto Netflix in recent days, paying off the cliffhanger from last year. In both incarnations, the series isn’t anime, but that’s not obvious to the average viewer. Netflix itself classifies Castlevania as anime.

Ottawa police nabbed a G2 driver for driving 146 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Sunday afternoon. The 20-year-old driver was caught travelling 66 km/h over the speed limit on Limebank Road. It is unclear where this occurred, but Limebank Road stretches from the southwest side of Ottawa International Airport to Manotick.

This week, I’m shouldering the modest job of discussing the science-fiction anime Gundam and Macross. These aren’t just series but epic franchises. They’re like the (mostly) live-action Star Trek and Star Wars, with umpteen iterations through the decades. Both nearly 50 years old, Gundam and Macross are newsworthy now, for separate reasons. First, there’s a new Gundam film out in Japan, with an American release date already set.

Like many countries, Japan makes the most of its animation “for” television. Or does it? I’m in Japan now. A moment ago, I flipped through some of this week’s anime, but not on TV.

This article is about a very long animated feature film, In This Corner of the World. A war drama directed by Sunao Katabuchi, it was released back in 2016 and runs to more than two hours. Well reviewed on international release, the original film is on multiple online platforms. Recently, though, a newer version of the film has become available on Crunchyroll.

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) responded to a fire Tuesday morning after a call into 911 from the owner of the structure. After 6:28 a.m., firefighters arrived on scene to a barn fully engulfed in flames and smoke on Walter Bradley Road near Pakenham, Ont.. Responding OFS members said the barn was starting to collapse. There were no humans inside but there were eight horses and 30 chickens. Officials confirm the horses were rescued but the chickens perished in the fire.

Tokyo often feels a century or two ahead of the rest of the world (anachronisms like faxes notwithstanding.) And yet when I saw The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim in a Tokyo cinema, the Saturday after Christmas, I could have slipped a few weeks into the past. After all, I’d read a heap of reports about how the Middle-Earth anime was DOA, at least on the big screen. In its first two weeks in U.S. cinemas, it failed to earn $10 million.
