A dozen or so years ago, I walked away from the streets. After thirty years shooting black & white film in-and-around my home city—I inexplicably lost the urge. I was going through a messy break-up at the time and found myself totally moribund of inspiration. A quote from the period, which appeared in the 2010 publication, ‘Stark Now’—gave rise to the impending implosion. “I’ve been taking the same photo for twenty five years, of course I’m a f**king loser!”Fast forward to now.

Entering the third round of the NCHSAA 4A playoffs, the Lake Norman High girls' basketball team had gone a perfect 17-0 at home. It took a while for them to get rolling Tuesday night, but behind a trapping, full-court zone defense the Wildcats improved to 18-0 at home and 27-1 overall with a 69-45 win over North Mecklenburg. The Vikings - who finished the season 25-4 - cut the lead to one point midway through the second period, but the relentless Wildcat defense eventually wore them down.

The Hopewell Titans celebrate after upsetting Southwestern 4A co-champion Charlotte Catholic in the first round of the NCHSAA 4A playoffs on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2025. Special to The Observer Hopewell senior guard Mike Brown scored 17 of his 28 points in the first half, propelling the Titans to a 53-52 upset win over Charlotte Catholic in the first round of the NCHSAA 4A basketball playoffs. Hopewell had gone just 8-7 since January, but won 19 games overall and finished third in its league.

After 21 days, he declared victory when a compromise was brokered, having remarked to reporters that he frequently fasts anyway as part of a health regimen. This admission was not well received. It seemed as if, in fasting, the senator had been pretending to do something self-sacrificing when, actually, it was self-serving.

Nobody was happier for Charlotte Catholic senior Nathan Schwartz on Friday than baseball teammate Mason Child. Child, the Cougars' starting pitcher, was solid into the seventh inning against Alexander Central in the teams' N.C. 4A West Regional semifinal, but after he allowed two runs in the top of the seventh, he could only hope his offense would come through.
