St. Paul’s started the season off slow against one of the toughest strengths of schedule in the state, and Bordes was a key cog in the Wolves' turnaround. He helped his team to a 12-match win streak to end the year. St. Paul’s outscored its opponents 18-3 in the postseason.

Stella Junius, Mount Carmel, Jr.The team captain scored 18 goals and dished out 10 assists during the Cubs championship run to a Division I state championship. While Junius did not lead Mount Carmel in scoring or assists – teammate Josie Randol notched 19 goals and 17 assists, the junior netted her goals in pivotal moments. She had the go-ahead goals in the district championship match against Dominican and in the quarterfinal, semifinal and championship matches.

Fourth-seeded Newman was a three-time reigning state champion and looking to head back to Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles in its Division III select quarterfinal game against No. 5 Rosepine at the Palestra. But the Eagles had other ideas. Hayden Brister scored 17 points in the fourth quarter and pumped in a game-high 31 points to dethrone the Greenies 65-57 on Friday night. Newman (21-7) and Rosepine (28-3) were tied at 37-37 entering the final quarter.

Bryce Bordes scored two second-half goals, and No. 6 St. Paul’s held off a potent Jesuit offensive attack to upset the second-seeded Blue Jays 3-1 in a Division I semifinal match at John Ryan Stadium on a windy Saturday afternoon. The Wolves (21-5-3) will face No. 4 Catholic of Baton Rouge in the Division I state championship match on at 5 p.m. Feb. 22 at Strawberry Stadium in Hammond. The Bears beat top-seeded Denham Springs 3-1 in their semifinal match.

The top-seeded Newman boys soccer team is headed back to the Division IV championship. After the Greenies fell short in the semifinals against Episcopal of Baton Rouge the past two seasons, Cole Spady, Rylan Claverie and George Villere scored two goals each to lead their team to a 6-0 win against No. 13 Calvary Baptist in a semifinal match at Michael Lupin Field on Friday.
