This article is part of the Answering Kids’ Hardest Questions series. God Established Creation OrderParents, sometimes we get really hard questions like, “Can I choose to be a boy or girl?” or “Can a boy be trapped in a girl’s body?” We think God has a lot to say in his word about this. When we are approached with questions like that, the first thing we want to do is go to Genesis 1. When we look at Genesis 1, we see this notion of creation order.

Respecting Earthly AuthorityParents, have you ever had your children ask you about politics? What’s going on on the news? What’s going on in yard signs? A Convoluted TermWe have a very close family friend named Allie.1 Allie does not “fit the profile” of every feminine stereotype. She’s physically tougher than most women we know (and perhaps, a lot of men). She has tattoos. She has a physically demanding job where she builds furniture. She’s just as comfortable in shorts and a T-shirt as she is in a dress. She knows she projects a “masculine vibe” by our culture’s standards. At the same time, Allie is a Christian and knows she’s a woman.

During the Nazi party’s rise in the 1930s, a document was adopted by the Confessing Church in Germany known as the Barmen Declaration. The statement affirmed the church’s allegiance to Jesus Christ as its one true head and rejected the idea that other powers, ideologies, or leaders could claim ultimate authority over Christian faith and practice. It also emphasized the church’s autonomy in spiritual matters and Scripture’s primacy in guiding Christian life and thought.

The Cultural LandscapeParenting in this culture is fraught with challenges that our parents did not encounter when we were kids. Our parents took certain things for granted that our generation of parenting no longer can. For example, the idea of “pronoun preference” was inconceivable twenty or thirty years ago. Parenting in today’s culture can make you feel like you’re in a boat headed out into uncharted waters.

Some Helpful StrategiesEveryone can remember when they first learned of the so-called “birds and bees.” You know what we’re talking about: how you learned what sex was. Some reading this can recall a helpful experience where your parents did this well. Or maybe some recall a particularly cringe and embarrassing moment that is now hard to forget decades later. Some others can remember learning this from a television show or a tasteless conversation at school.
