    AccountabilitySince 1989, 3,272 men and women across the United States have been exonerated after being convicted and collectively serving 28,917 years in prison for crimes they did not commit. That’s an annual average of 96 exonerations, with the rate much higher as of late. During the nine-year period from 2014 through 2022, an average of 172 men and women were exonerated each year—about 3.3 per week. The average exoneree lost nearly nine years in prison before his or her innocence was uncovered.
