IntroductionChronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive, debilitating inflammatory lung disease affecting 65 million people worldwide. Pathologically, COPD is characterised by emphysema together with airway inflammation and remodelling that collectively lead to deficits in airway and alveolar function and associated shortness of breath, chronic cough, hypoxaemia, susceptibility to infection and, in some cases, death.
