The biennial Exercise Joint Viking, which ended on March 14, is the largest military drill in Norway and the alliance’s most important recurring Arctic war game. Without it, operational cooperation will waste and NATO armies will be less prepared to repel a Russian attack. Will there be another in 2027? Since Russia’s full-scale invasion, fallout from its war has spread beyond Ukraine on multiple occasions, with attack drones and missiles crossing into NATO countries in nine confirmed incidents. Drones or debris have crashed into Romanian territory and Russian ballistic missiles have violated Polish airspace.

Before President Joe Biden leaves office on January 20, one of his final decisions could be to designate Ukraine as a Major Non-NATO Ally (MNNA).
