The pontiff was quoted as saying in a 2024 interview with a Swiss broadcaster that Ukraine should have "the courage of the white flag", and sue for peace to end the conflict with Russia.

Lviv, Ukraine ReutersA Russian drone and missile attack early on Wednesday killed seven people, including four members of the same family, in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, local officials said. The Mayor of Lviv, which is close to the border with NATO member Poland, said one man, Yaroslav Bazylevych, lost his wife and three young daughters when their home was struck.
