The Guernsey Racing Pigeon Club has called for ‘constructive and open discussion’ with Ports and the Civil Aviation authorities to find a solution to the recent ban on the large-scale release of racing pigeons. Nigel Legg from the GRPC and Guernsey Homing Society said the decision to restrict the release of racing pigeons within an eight-mile radius of the airport was disappointing, given the long-standing nature of the sport and its cultural significance to the local community.

Caritas is taking urgent action in an attempt to help people sleeping rough by launching the project and called on the community to help identify a small site where the pods can be placed. Charity chairman Graham Merfield said the appeal was in addition to its plans to import 24 modular homes to a permanent site. ‘Since launching our modular community project last September, we’ve been contacted throughout the winter by people sleeping rough or sleeping in cars.

Michael Bertram left his position as the island’s chief civil servant last week with ‘immediate effect’ and sources on the island implied he had been forced out. However Conseiller Steve Lord said this was not the case. ‘Whoever told you he was pushed is either misinformed or misinforming,’ he said. ‘He did resign. I helped him with his resignation letter on the phone while he wrote it. I spoke to him just now and confirmed it with him.

‘Adequate safety assurances’ could help see a ban on racing pigeons reviewed, Guernsey Ports has said. A spokesman said the decision had been taken following an increase in requests for large-scale bird releases, which prompted a review. Head of safety, risk and compliance Lewis Dale said while the decision may seem heavy-handed, the airport was trying to mitigate risks posed by a large number of birds flying off track and into critical areas.
