EDF Renewables UK has contracted Finnish technology group Wärtsilä for two battery energy storage system (BESS) projects. The deal, announced yesterday, covers the 47.5MW/95MWh Indian Queens project in Cornwall and the 50MW/100MWh Bredbury project in Greater Manchester. Both are currently under construction, with Bredbury scheduled for commercial operation in late 2025 and Indian Queens during the first half of next year.

Independent power producer (IPP) Enlight Renewable Energy is expanding its Gecama Wind Project in Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, by integrating solar PV and battery energy storage systems (BESS). With an investment of US$310 million, the project will add a total PV capacity of 225MW alongside 220MWh of BESS. Currently, it is the country’s “largest” wind farm with a capacity of 329MW, the firm said. The project is expected to reach commercial operation in the second half of 2026.

The Ministry of Electricity and Energy of South Africa has defended the integrity of its recent battery storage tender from accusations raised by the country’s main opposition party. The government department issued a statement on Tuesday (3 June), with electricity and energy minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa reaffirming that the third bid window of the Battery Storage Independent Power Producers Procurement Program (BESIPPPP) was conducted in line with established frameworks.
