WOODBRIDGE – Kevin Penny’s gem seemed like a thousand years away in a drama-filled seventh inning. The South Plainfield lefty threw six shutout frames in Thursday’s NJSIAA North 2 Group 3 final as the Tigers built a nice lead. Not so fast. Colonia rallied with four runs to cut the deficit to one. Mike Castagna, the second pitcher of the inning, barely had time to warm up as he took the mound.

LINCROFT – As the ball sailed over the left field fence, it almost seemed like part of the script for the St. Joseph baseball team. The Falcons have been on a magical run with 10 straight wins, including four walk-off victories to capture the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament. So Wednesday, when Logan Ring slugged a two-run home run in the top of the sixth that cut Christian Brothers Academy’s lead to two in the NJSIAA South Non-Public A semifinals, it seemed the Falcons were about to rally.

There have been plenty of key hits and big-time strikeouts this spring. The Greater Middlesex Conference coaches recognized the league’s best players with their All-Conference and All-Division teams. The GMC Baseball Coaches Association selected South River’s Julius Rosado has the Hitter of the Year. The prolific senior hit .500 (37-for-74) along with 28 walks, 33 RBIs, 30 stolen bases and five home runs.

The Falcons have certainly thrilled their fans – and surely made them watch with one eye open at times – over a 10-game winning streak that included four walk-off wins to capture the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament championship. Friday’s NJSIAA South Non-Public A quarterfinal once again came down to the final inning.

The NJSIAA sectional baseball tournaments kick off this week. The first-round games are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday with the quarterfinals set for Thursday and Friday.
