Ron Smith, who has been described as the godfather of HVAC, died in December. He touched those in the HVAC industry, either as a teacher, investor, coach or mentor by sharing his systems for improving business to anyone who wanted and needed his help. He perfected everything from maintenance agreements to improving the efficiency of the team in all areas, service and installation as well as dispatching and running the office.

We’ve been through it all – crazy weather, economic ups and downs, and the tech explosion. As we kick off a new year, it’s a mix of feeling at home and a bit frustrated, looking back on our wild ride, especially in recent years. Our industry has gone through quite a transformation, like watching a blockbuster.

You remember “Back to the Future,” a great series of movies starring Michael J Fox, where his character, Marty McFly, gets sent back in time in a DeLorean. There, he has to make sure his parents meet and fall in love, so he can get back to the future. My title is not so much a shoutout to the movie, while it is a great movie, but more a declaration that we need to do some things differently this year, rather than what we have been doing the last few years.
