It’s certainly easy to see why Boys from the Blackstuff has been adapted for the stage. Alan Bleasdale’s 1982 TV serial made an almighty impact and is still remembered today as a vivid portrait of Liverpool at the time. But that’s not quite the same as the idea being a good one, a successful one, one that works. If you go in to the stage show with reservations, the chances are you’ll come out with those same reservations intact.

Manchester’s comedy scene is thriving, with new nights springing up all the time. What’s remarkable, though, is that one city centre comedy night is fast approaching its 30th anniversary, and many comedians on the national circuit regard it as something truly special. In fact, Joe Lycett called it “the best comedy club in the world”, and he knows what he’s on about.

Finally he grabs the mic and turns to glare at the audience, his face white as bone. This is Frankie Monroe and, believe it or not, he’s likely to be the funniest thing you’ve seen in a long time.

Until the day I die, I’ll remember the moment when Farhaan Shah finds himself locked in a walk-in safe. Likewise the delegation to the Gome Elders. The what? You’ll have to see Tales of the Toymender at Oldham Library to find out. Once again, the professional company from Oldham Theatre Workshop (OTW), many of them actors who came through the youth theatre, present a family Christmas show at Oldham Library, written by Sarah Nelson, with music composed and the whole thing directed by James Atherton.

Since it first emerged in 2013, Come From Away has gradually developed a reputation as one of the top new musicals of its day, right up there with Wicked and Six. It’s wowed Broadway and the West End, and now it’s arrived at Salford’s Lowry for the festive season. Sure enough, this Lowry production, directed by Christopher Ashley, is pretty dazzling.
