It’s official: for the first time in more than 20 years, there will be no pre-release reviews for a new Nintendo console. According to a company spokesperson, Nintendo decided not to send Switch 2 review units to press ahead of launch because “important features and updates” will only be available via a system update on the day of the console’s official release, on June 5.

Switch 2’s Mario Kart World is more of a departure than it looks. Of course, the move to a large, open world is already a hugely significant shift for the Nintendo series best known for its four-race cups and multiplayer time trials. Not least because its interconnected map means that Grand Prix, with an expanded 24 racers, have become more like frantic A-to-B excursions, rather than the multi-lap affairs we’re used to.

There’s been a lot of debate over Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour’s $10 price point, and whether Switch 2’s introductory mini-game collection should’ve been bundled with the console for no additional cost. Whether you think it’s worth the small cost or not will, of course, come down to your personal preference.

People Can Fly has cancelled two unannounced games and signalled there will be layoffs at the studio as a result of publisher disagreements. Project Gemini, an unannounced game which was set to be published by Square Enix, along with a separate unannounced VR game referred to as Project Bifrost, have both been cancelled. People Can Fly reportedly laid off over 30 developers working on the unannounced Square Enix game last January.

Yet another user has obtained a Nintendo Switch 2 well before its launch date and posted a video showing the new console’s setup process. On Wednesday, a Russian YouTube user posted a video showing the initial boot process for Switch 2, as well as an extensive tour of its system menus. As noted by other users who’ve obtained Switch 2 early, the console can’t do much more at this point, since it requires a mandatory system update in order to boot games.
