IRMOΒ βΒ Mike Ward is Irmo's newest councilmember, winning a June 3 special election with 57.3 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results announced June 3. Ward, 40, defeated George Frazier, who received 28.6 percent of the vote, and Ed Greco, who took 14.1 percent, with 83 percent of Richland County and 67 percent of Lexington County precincts reporting.

CAMDENΒ β Amid a yearlong pause on new housing developments, some residents and business owners in a fast-growing Midlands city say there should be more affordable housing, while others oppose major residential projects. Census estimates released last week show Camden added 436 residents last year for a total of 8,899 β its largest increase in years and 10th-fastest growth in the state. Since 2020, the community has grown 14 percent, adding 1,092 people, the data shows.

COLUMBIAΒ βΒ A downtown Columbia restaurant and bar remains open after a Memorial Day weekend fire at the establishment. Emergency responders arrived at California Dreaming at 401 Main St., near the University of South Carolinaβs recreation center, shortly before 9:30 p.m. on May 24, Columbia-Richland Fire Department said on social media. They requested additional units after seeing fire showing from the rear section of the roof and third floor, the post said.
