New York lawmakers face financial strain as budget delay continues

New York State lawmakers return to Albany Thursday -- at which time they will either pass a budget extender or start voting on budget bills if a deal is somehow reached by then. We are being told they have a deal on one of the sticking points -- discovery reform. The budget is now more than two weeks late. There's been a call for legislation to freeze the Governor's salary when the budget is late.

DiNapoli has been the state Comptroller for 18 years -- he's won four statewide elections. But what about 2026? He will be 72 years old next year. The waiting game continues tonight at the NYS Capitol. Legislative leaders and Governor Kathy Hochul appear no closer to an agreement on a state budget, this nine days after the budget was due. It appears now that policy issues are standing in the way. The man who leads the Republican minority conference in the State Assembly is on the outside looking in. Only the leaders of the majority conferences take part in shaping the deal with the Governor.

Tonight the NYS budget is more than a week late, with no end in sight. The hold up seems to center more around policy than fiscal issues. The budget negotiations revolve around what's known as "Three people in a room" -- the Governor, the Assembly Speaker and the Senate Majority Leader. Today I was able to ask Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins why they can't get a deal done. She told us there are many difficult policies in the budget this year that take negotiation to get them right.

The final round of SUNY’s Mascot Madness is now upon us. It’s a tournament to determine the favorite mascot in the SUNY system. It started with 35 mascots and it’s now down to two – Red from SUNY Oneonta and Damien from UAlbany, Dragon vs. Great Dane. This is the 12th year of the competition – Red won in 2021, Damien has yet to earn a title. The two University presidents have spiced things up with a friendly wager.

It's your state budget, it's officially late now and You Paid For It.The 2026 NYS budget was due last night by midnight. Lawmakers weren't even in Albany yesterday, so when they returned today they admitted failure and passed a budget extender. Republicans have lashed out at the Democrats who control both houses of the Legislature, and they are using phrases like "bloated, unsustainable budget" and "incompetence of the highest order".
Repairs on Mario M. Cuomo Bridge To Begin Soon

It was seven months ago that we revealed structural problems on the recently completed 4 billion dollar Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. Now we’ve learned the work to repair 61 structurally deficient anchor pipes that connect to the bridge cables is about to start. NYS Thruway Executive Director Frank Hoare says it will be a multi-phase rehabilitation project that will start in just a matter of weeks, once the weather gets a little warmer.
Thruway Authority, Union, DOT call for action; 78,000 repeat speeders caught in work zones

A show of strength at Thruway Authority headquarters in Albany today -- as the Thruway, DOT and union leaders came together to call on the NYS Legislature to make highway work zones safer for highway workers. All those folks were on hand today to call for making speed enforcement cameras permanent in work zones. Since those cameras went up as a pilot program at ten Thruway sites and 20 DOT sites two years ago, nearly half a million work zone speeders have been cited.
