Generating Symbolic Music With AI

This was an interesting project I built a while ago. Here's me talking about it. The goal is to generate MIDI format music with AI. MIDI files represent the beginning and end of each note, among other things. In other words, they are much more similar to pages of sheet music than to audio waveforms. MIDI format, as opposed to an audio file, is thus considered a symbolic representation of music. Especially for generative purposes, you want as much training data as possible.

In our previous alert, we reported on the proposal of the China Administration of Cyberspace (“CAC”) to relax the cross-border data transfer compliance requirements under the PRC Personal Information Protection Law (“PIPL”). On 22 March 2024, the CAC issued the much-anticipated Provisions on the Promotion and Regulation of Cross-border Data Transfer (“Provisions”) which confirm the relaxation measures which will have significant implications for multinational businesses.

Before this project, I’d been working exclusively with high-level PyTorch on my machine learning projects. I always had an issue, however, with understanding many of the pre-written PyTorch functions. For instance, how exactly optimizer.step() functioned seemed irrelevant as long as it worked okay. All I knew was that it involved calculus, nothing I’d be able to understand anyway, right?
